September - Spring - Football

September means Spring Time and Finals Football Fever...

 

September brings Spring and finally a few sunny warm days. Also that means its football finals time and for a lot of us that means Grand Final Day BBQs. Even if our team isn't playing its still a great day to get together and throw a few Hamburgers and Sausages on the BBQ. So as the day draws closer make sure you have the BBQ ready to cook on, and if the job falls to you here are a few tips to get it clean and ready for use

Once a year you need to do a good clean on your grill. This requires that you take portions of it apart. First, start by disconnecting the gas and then lift out the grill parts layer by layer. Once you get down to the burners, make sure you inspect them thoroughly. There shouldn't be anything blocking the flow of gas. If the burner is clogged it will give you uneven heat and make for poor grilling. If you can clean it, do so, if not, then replace it. If your grill uses lava rocks or ceramic briquettes you need to make sure that these are not too heavily encrusted with cooked on foods. If they happen to be, replace them to avoid bad tasting smoke that dirty rocks can produce.

With everything out of the grill, clean it completely with soapy water. If the paint is coming off, or if your grill is showing signs of rust then you need to do some painting. Other than that, put everything back in, check to make sure that all connections are good, and then turn it on. Let the grill heat completely before you cook again to make sure that any left over soap residue gets burned off, and wipe over with oil or lemon.

Yummy Winter Warming Spicey Soup Recipe!!

This warming Indian Spiced Soup combines convenience with the nutrional benefits of barley, lentils and vegies to produce a warming yet low fat, low budget meal that the whole family can enjoy.

Ingredients for 4 people:
1 tablespoon of vegetable oil
1 brown onion finely chopped
1/4 cup korma curry paste (adjust to taste/heat level)
1 litre vegetable stock
400g can diced tomatoes
2/3 cup red lentils (rinsed)
1/4 pearl barley (washed)
1 bunch of fresh coriader, chopped.
Serve with naan bread (sold at leading supermarkets)

Culinary Tip - Did you know?
You can use the entire coriander bunch for flavour, including the stems to the leaves, to intensify the aroma and aspect of the dish.

The Recipe:

Heat oil in a large saucepan over a medium to high heat and fry onions for 3-4 minutes, or until softened. Add the desired amount of korma curry paste for your spice level and stir to combine with onions for 1 minute.

Stir in the prepared stock to the onion/korma mixture. Add tomatoes, lentils, barley and bring to the boil. Cover and reduce heat to low, then allow to simmer for 20-25 minutes, until barley is tender.

Serve immediately with a generous sprinkling of fresh coriander and fresh naan. Enjoy!

This dish is vegetarian and low fat friendly with no cholesterol.. so seconds is always an option!
